Katelyn Musumeche is a 20-year-old graduate of St. Thomas More pursuing her chemical engineering degree, with a minor in mathematics at University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She has been dancing with Lafayette Ballet Theatre for nine years — and can often be found taking long bubble baths with Epsom Salt to help relax her muscles after a taxing day of practice. One of her favoritedancememories comes from the first year she was cast in the Snow Scene of the Nutcracker. She was one of the only twodancerscast in the scene that was not in LBT’s Christine Beaullieu, Elliot Trahan and Katelyn Musumeche dance together during a performance of the Nutcracker.company, so she would often stay late after class to practice. On one of these late nights, she began singing the performance song at the top of her lungs, and upon returning to the room, Ms. Mitzi let her know she should probably stick withdancing.Katelyn has learned a lot throughdance, but the biggest thing it has taught her is to keep pushing herself."Even when I think something was impossible I push myself to do more,” said Katelyn. "For example, I got involved in a lot of organizations, have spent countless hours learning something until I finally understand it — and I am never content with where I am.”Although she chose to pursue a time-intensive degree, Katelyn continues to invest the time necessary to pursuedancebecause of the much needed break and stress relief it offers her from her school work.On the few days she has off, Katelyn enjoys relaxing, getting caught up, spending time with family and friends, hanging out around the house and watching her favorite movies: The Notebook, The Titanic and Mean Girls. If she could give her 11-year-old self some advice, it would be to not take criticism so harshly, since it’s designed to make you better not make you feel bad about yourself.Dance is a huge part of Katelyn’s life and has developed her into the person she is today."Dance has made me the person I am today, very driven, focused, goal oriented and someone who holds myself to a higher standard,” she said.
